At the moment im trying to extend the plot but there is a mass of ground elder here, ive cleared this in the past but it keeps coming back, i need to get rid of this for good.

It might need to be glyphosate then, sold as Roundup. If it persists you might need to give it another dose.
Welcome to the grapevine by the way. Someone else is SURE to have ground elder and give you some more tips.

You leave a single tiny piece and it will come back, glyphosate will do it as Flummery says but it can lay dormant for months, i tend to treat it like bindweed and rip it out when ever I see it knowing that I am never ever going to get it all.

I've been trying for five years - it still comes back. But then I won't use weedkiller - so I knew it would take years.
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!

In one of our previous houses I spent 13 years trying to get rid of it, sprayed it, dug it up and it still came back. If you break the root when you dig it up it just keeps shooting.

          Good luck

Hello Tull and welcome to the Vine. Ground Elder is one of the most pernicious weeds of all. You can dig it out all you like. Leave a 1/4 inch and it will be straight back up.
Best way is Glyphosphate (Roundup) You can spray it on, or might be more practical to paint it on. You will certainly have to do it several times. That might get rid of it - or just keep it under control until next year. It's tough stuff !

Would you say worse than Mares Tail?

I can't get rid of this, so I wouldn't fancy battling aginst Ground Elder without Chemicals!

I wouldn't say worse than Mares Tails Vicpivo, but not far behind it.

well thanks for that its sound my problems are common, sounds like the folk will be out again this week, may just move my garden plot away from it and start attacking while the veg grow

I never had ground elder, wouldn't even recognise it (got everything else though). apparently Tagetes Minuta, mexican marigold, will repel it. I haven't tried it myself
