When do weeds go dormant?

My plot is covered in docks (and other weeds) and I am digging my way through them. However during the holidays it is not possible to get down as often as I'd like (not really fair to expect 4 year old to dig for hours, she gets stroppy we are not growing anything yet). Everytime I go the docks seem bigger then ever.

When will they stop growing so fast so I am not starting with a bigger job than I left on my last visit

Cut the seed heads off the docks and bin them. That way they won't seed themselves all over your plot.
Then dig up the roots whenever you can.

they will do: this is summer and everything's trying to go to seed as fast as poss.

Cover your weeds with a thick mulch of cardboard or wet newspapers. Uncover a section as and when you're able to dig it over and plant it up

they aren't doing anything for about 3 days in Midwinter

Seriously, weeds are an all-year-round problem, because they are perfectly adapted to the conditions you find them growing in. Chickweed will grow, flower and seed all year round, for instance.

Deadhead religiously so they don't go to flower & seed, and cover them with a light-blocking mulch
