Chard disease ID

Can anybody ID this disease on my chard?

It's my favourite and most used plant (I make green smoothies every morning), so I don't want to see it end up in a bad way.

The pictures are pretty clear.

Does anybody know what it is and if I can prevent/eradicate it? Is it still edible?

Looks like beet rust to me. Don't know how to stop it (I don't use chemicals) but damage can be limited by removing affected leaves.

The plants in question haven't been doing too well. I think I'll just remove them and stick something else in. Cheers for the answer.

I recognise the symptoms but have never really seen this as a problem as I remove the damaged leaves and let the plant grow more, or take the plant out completely. I haven't needed to sow chard for years though as we allow quite a few plants to go up to seed and then it seeds everywhere on the plot.

We now tend to let chard plants grow in the paths and 'spare' areas around the beds and there is always more than we need. So if there is a rust disease or some other problem, we just cut the affected parts off.

I think the reason for this is that the slugs in my garden seem to have been picking on two particular plants, and they've been struggling a bit.

So contrary to my previous post, I'm just going to pick the bad leaves off and give it some major TLC. If the slugs are so interested then they're probably the nicest plants in the patch.

My electric slug fence should be fully operational by tomorrow, so hopefully this should no longer be a problem.
