  • Brussel disease/egg question??

    Hi all,

Hope you don't mind my first post being a problem/question!!??

This is only my second year in my garden and after growing what I thought were cauliflowers but turned out to be cabbages last year I thought I'd try some more veg this year!

All seems to be going well except I got out in a small break in the rain yesterday and found that my brussel sprouts have got something strange going on with them! The ends of the leaves have started to curl inwards, go yellow and on inspection, seem to have lots of tiny white/grey things that look a bit like grit attached!

    Can anyone help???

Hi CV - and welcome to the Vine!

I certainly don't mind your first post being a problem - especially as they sound exactly like the cabbage that I planted out on Saturday! They look a bit like grey aphid, yes? As I spotted them when they were still in the pots, I managed to wash most of them (and me!) off by holding them under the tap...but I guess a washing up liquid spray would knock 'em off!

But perhaps wait till more experienced grapes give us both a definitive answer.

As to thinking the cabbages were caulis last year..........sounds like you will fit in here very well indeed!!

You've got a type of aphid. Pick them off , rub them off or spray with a solution of soapy water.

          Thanks folks,

I went into a bit of panic mode yesterday and picked off all the leaves with eggs on and sprayed what was left with a bug gun!! Some of the other leaves have a kind of blueish/purpleish 'haze' on them and wasn't sure if this was normal or not! (Can you really tell that I'm a beginner? )

They're all 'leaning' after the weather that we've had so I may stake them. I was worried too because I have broccoli planted next to them ~ didn't want them catching any germs

On the plus side the fruit trees, blueberries, lettuces and strawberries seem to be doing okay!
