grapevine problem

Hi,

I inherited a greenhouse with grapevine 4 years ago. The grapes are 'Vitalis Ruby' and for the first 2 summers i got a great harvest, and made some rather tasty wine However last summer after a decent start some nodes on new shoots started to wither which then killed the rest of the shoot and i got only a handful of grapes

This year that same thing has started happening again and I'm a bit puzzled as to why. I'm not sure if it's a disease, pests or malnutrition.

I took these pictures today, only 2 days ago these were looking fine and healthy. I'm still a complete novice at this and I would really appreciate any help / advice.

Gosh....I don't know what that is.
My grapevine is under attack from pigeons. Not quite sure what they're after but they are pecking off bits and droping them to the floor. Is your feeling that this is disease damage or could birds be the culprit?

Also, whereabouts are you based?
What's your weather like?

I've never had real frost damage on mine so I'm not sure what that loooks like.

I have lost grapes to mould but much later in the season, when it's really hot and humid, which is not blimmin likely if you're in the UK!

Anyway, where are my manners?

It looks like somekind of die back. I've a vine and even though it's been mighty cold here for May the frost hasn't caused any damage. As muddled has said, do you live in the UK?

I'm surprised, pigeons are a nuisance here but they've never touched my grape vine.

it's in a small greenhouse, pretty sure its not birds. I'm in Edinburgh and the weather is not great but the last few days have been ok, and last summer was good (for here!)

I did find some ants crawling around the paving slabs of the greenhouse could they be the culprits? I have tried laying down some organic insect powder but not sure how effective that will be.

Last summer about 90% of the grapevine developed the exact same problem I'll be gutted if things go the same way this year

Are the roots in the GH or outside? In a pot?

Hi Scarlet the roots are in the ground inside the greenhouse. No idea how old the vine is but at a guess i'd say at least 7 years.

I'm hoping someone else will a little more knowledge than me will help.I think it maybe somekind of nutrient deficiency rather than frost as you said last summer you lost the crop. I think it's highly unlikely ants have anything to do with it but check the underside of the leaves for any bugs. A couple more photos would be helpful, of a larger area and a few more different shoots. Sorry I can't help anymore. There's a few grape growers on here so you might get a better response tomorrow.

Nor mine in the last ten years Scarlet (and the pigeons have always been here). It's a big vine and pretty bombproof so I'm not worried. This is just a new phenom....phenomen....thing

Do you feed or top dress the soil at all Mr J. If so what with?

I would be spraying it with a solution of a few tea spoons of full fat milk powder in a litre water, or copper lime mix, to make sure its not one of the mildews , just in case

Have you sprayed it already?
