  • How to use Dithane on leeks

Been given a box of dithane as I'm told its the best thing to prevent rsut on my show leeks. There are no instructions on ho wmcuh per litre of water to use so can anyone give me some advice please??

Tried all over the web and just drawn a blank?

I have two leek trenches each one holding 12 leeeks - Cumbrians and Betty's.

    Many thanks in advance!

Hello Framyorky welcome to the vine. Are you sure that you really want to use Diathane it looks like really nasty stuff. If you are not going to eat the leeks I suppose it would be OK but I would not use it on anything I was going to eat.

Can you add your location to your profile, it makes it easier when offering advice.

Still legal to use though....but there are probably better and safer options such as oregano or thyme oil, or milk powder

Apparently can use till 2016....just not sold

        PlantProtection.co.uk - Dithane 945, Registration No: 14547

The oregano oil is supposed to be just as if not more effective, just like soluble asprin is on tomatoes for blight

There are different types of Dithane I can find on goooogle ( at least 4 types I've found)....you need to know the concentration etc of what you have to determine the dose.

I've just been reading a PDF download and quite honestly would refuse to use it!!!

Where did you get it from? can you find out the dose from them???

Am I right in thinking the soils with a high nitrogen content encourages rust?

              Oregano oil?

Thanks for the responses. Can you describe the oregano oil method to me please as this sounds so much more friendly to the environment??

You would need to test it to check no leaf burn as I havent used it on leeks, but I have sprayed it on many things now, roses, mint, peaches, lettuce, apples, onions and had no problems

I would try .5ml of oregano oil or thyme oil or better a 50/50 mix of them both in 1 liter of water, I was told more but I did get little burn marks from it with 3ml in 2 liters of water, but not with 1ml in 1 liter of water

Just put it in the water in spray bottle and add a tiniest drop of washing up liqquid ( unless you have johnsons baby shampo that is milder again ) this emulsifies the oil to make it work in a thin film
Spraying on things kills almost all mold, fungi etc but also some insects on contact with them when wet.
