Which weed Killer?

My plot has pretty much neglected last year to due personal stuff getting in the way, so I now have a huge covering of weeds, grass etc in all of my beds. I have been digging and burning but not making a huge difference with all of the rain and all I'm getting is more weeds :-(

Can anyone recommend a weed killer I can use on large areas that I will still be able to grow veg in this year?

I also have hens and should be able to keep them off the veg garden for a while but would need to be very careful they don't come in contact etc

I really did not want to revert to this........

Can you smother the weeds with cardboard or plastic until you have the time to weed them?

I had covered over the winter but as the beds have Ben left for a year they are really bad. I dug out as much as I could about 5" down with roots etc then used a burner wand but no way I could plant out. I put in a few seed tatties but the weeds are winning :-(. Maybe I need to forget planting this year and clear properly for next......

can you not find a way to put your chickens IN your veggie patch during the day for a bit? My girls devour every single bit of green they come across....weeds and weed seeds stand no chance!
