  • Monster Slugs!

Article from the New Scientist published today, apparently they seem to injure baby birds... When I first started gardening I was trying to not harm them, but since then I noticed how greedy they are, they devour young plants leaving nothing but a stem which kills the plants. Their eating habits are selfish and not sustainable. Injuring little baby birds seriously crosses the line!

Not sure where to post this, there is no predators forum section!

ps: will be back posting more soon, just trying to finish my final MSc dissertation at the moment. Missed reading all your posts!

Hi Nicos! Thank you very much, deadline is on the 19th! After that I will be moving to Swansea for my PhD aand apply for an allotment there! I wonder if veg tastes more salty when you grow near the sea.

Thank you for moving my thread, couldn't find the pests and predators section!

After this I just don't have any sympathy for slugs anymore. Snails I still like a bit! We'll need to put slug pellets around bird nests the way this is going...

You are welcome. Thank you! I like the New Scientist, always has intriguing info, minus the monster slugs, that was simply scary!

Allotments in Swansea have a long waiting list so will see how things pan out, but they are a few minutes walk from the sea. Will be interesting!

Looks like a horrible Spanish slug in the photo. They'll eat almost anything. I once saw one in my garden halfway through eating another Spanish slug. The adults don't seem to survive the winters here but the eggs do, and hatch out in the spring. Any that I see go straight into the salty bucket of slug doom. I don't like to use slug pellets because I also have Leopard slugs and Roman snails in my garden that I don't like to kill. And hedgehogs that might get poisoned.

Well, I've never seen one of those but if I ever do, I'll know what to do with it. Last time I was visiting my parents, they had one in their hall. Apparently it lived under the stairs and would come out at night. They could never catch it, just spotted the slimy trails all over the carpet. I lobbed it out into the garden. Won't be doing that if it ever happens again.

Hope you hit your dissertation deadline, Ryez, and all's going well.

I have a "treat" for you, caught one today munching on my tomatoes! Couldn't believe my eyes!

                          It made a large hole...

Is that normal? I wonder if that's why I find large bites on my strawberries too...

Did you know a slug has approximately 27,000 teeth? I didn't. I found out here:
