Rather than fur, I would say that there is a sort of mould that shows when the temperature and dampness in the air are 'right' (or wrong moreso - since they spelled the end of all my outdoor toms and my spuds) but I remember seeing the 'fur' on mine too - can't see it when the leaves are dry and can't see it when they are sopping either.
