  • Bean disease?!

    Hello All

Can anyone help? I have a few Borlotto (Firetongue) beans growing in a tub and one of them seems to have yellow spots on some of the leaves. One of my books suggests red spider mite but I can see or feel any of the little blighters on the leaves. Do you have any suggestions as to what it might be. Im terrified ofdreaded lurgys at the moment as I lost my entire crop of tomatoes to blight! Aaargh

Welcome to the Vine, ES - and happy growing!

You are not alone with the dreaded blight, this year!

I'm no expert, however, I would think that all your barlotti beans need is a good feed, and they'll perk up in no time!

Of course I stand to be corrected.......

Red spider mite is not common outdoors. Even if you had them you would not be able to feel them, and they are hard to see - they're really tiny. Leaves tend to wilt, go yellow, and all you can see if you look really closely is very fine spider webs. If you have yellow spots on the leaves, maybe you have watered or it has rained, then the sun has come out and the light through the droplets left on the leaves has scorched them. Unfortunate, but not terminal.

I'm not sure this is going to help in the slightest, but a good many of my climbing beans are suffering from something I'm not familiar with previously..... the leaves, perfectly healthy, then turn a pale brown, from root level upwards. So far, it has in no way affected the bean pods, but I am rather concerned?
The same has recently been happening to the Sweet Peas, which HAVE had powdery mildew.
Do you think we are talking about the same thing here?
The Winter Squashes that I have been growing in the same place as the Sweet Peas are also suffering similarly. I would LOVE to know.
What a difficult year we are all having? But hey - we may learn something!

          Hello again

Thanks for the replies, I think Ill take all the advice and give them a jolly good feed and spray for spider mite and cross my fingers.

Also can anyone tell me if its true that birds dont eat slug pellets? I am batteling the slimy critters on a massive scale but im also trying to cultivate a relationship with a young robin who has set up camp in my garden. I dont want him to think the slug pellets are dinner.

Unfortunatly while the bird may not eat the pellets it will eat the poisoned slugs - and be poisoned.

Beer traps and/or hedgehogs are good answers!
The weeks and the years are fine. It's the days I can't cope with!
