Snail eggs

I set up one of the beds for square foot gardening. I'd already filled it with compost about a month or so ago. I then covered it with ground fabric until i had a chance to do something.

Today, whilst setting up one section, I noticed translucent beads connected together a bit like a chain of pearls in two of the squares. I removed them and chucked them into a bit of the border.

I've had a look online and they look like snail eggs. Is there anything I can do to prevent them developing into snails?

I have sprinkled them with salt on one occasion and poured boiling water on them on another. They didn't seem to like either.

They're quite difficult to squish unless they're on a hard surface, perhaps scrape them up and bin em.

Sorry but I keep imagining tiny little egg cups for snail eggs

Pick out what you see and bin them. Would birds eat them?

I think birds & maybe centipedes would eat them,if they're left on the border exposed to frosts I don't think they'll survive,they like laying eggs in sheltered places like under the fabric. Maybe the adults can be found at night with a torch,get rid of them all now so there's less of a springtime problem hopefully!

I also let the birds have the ones I find. I just pick them up and put them on the bird table

If it is just a small area perhaps lift the cover for a while to let the birds in and scrape about.

Thanks all. I'd used the fabric cover to avoid one of the neighbour's cat(s) using the raised bed as a litter tray. Glad I left the eggs to one side.

Good luck keeping the cats off,I have to use sticks & bits I prune off the shrubs to protect my growing areas,my cat attempts to go wherever I touch out there like he owns it.

Over the weekend was digging the plot.
Many of the divots dug down last year are full of slug eggs...

Left as many to the birds, but going to have a real war on my hands this year.

This is why I need to get chickens into the frame....
