I have found something orange and maggot-shaped making a hole in one leek (out of three picked). no previous signs and the others all look healthy in the ground.
how much action do I need to take?
what does the leaf-miner look like?

It's probably not actually a beetle. There's the allium leaf miner, which VC pointed you to. It's the larva of a fly so would look just like a maggot, with no head or legs and whitish in colour.

Then there's the caterpillar of the leek moth. This is "creamy-white with brown heads and small legs".

The moth sounds more like yours in colour. It's supposed to be found only in the south of England but is gradually moving northwards. Where are you based?

If it's not one of those two, I don't know what else makes holes in leeks.

Well, it looks more like the Alium leaf-miner (am in London, so within geog spread).

What was odd was that it wasn't a tunnel, but a circular nibbling away at one layer.

Anyway, what does the panel think I should do
(I'll be rotating anyway),
should I just hang on and eat the veg as they come
or should I pull it up now?

(ie does it make any difference to the odds of it staying around)
