Re-potted Orange tee is failing!

Hi Folks,

First, thanks in advance for any help. I am not a gardener, in fact my track record is diabolical, never had any luck at all with plants, a total novice.

My daughter bought me an orange tree for Christmas 2017 and it needed re-potting so I got a larger pot, made sure it has holes for drainage and bought some fertilizer and general compost. Now, my Mrs said I should put 'stones' in the bottom and there were some old broken pots I could break up for this. Which I did but notices they had a green felt-like algae on them. She said it was fine, wouldn't matter. So I went ahead and replanted the tree with this rubble at the base and layered manure and compost. Lots of water afterwards.

This was only a week ago and I noticed today the leaves are going yellow and drying. I've got a photo, not sure if the forum will allow a post but for clarity, they're a patchy yellow with a grainy texture.

Does anyone know what I've done wrong?

I'm no expert on these having killed a few in my time, but if you have a close look at the affected leaves does it look to you that the surface of the leaf is missing ? If it is damaged then my bet would be on some sort of critter eating it.

Hopefully someone who knows what they're talking about will be along soon. :-)

Hi Dek,

The leaves look like a magnesium deficiency so add some Epsom salts to the top of the soil this will help it.

You say you used normal compost, citrus trees normally prefer a soil based compost like John Innes no2 or no3, but what is done is done.

The leaves also look like it is starting to have issues with nitrogen as well a good lawn food will sort this out and make sure you water enough not too much nor not too little as this can effect them too.

Just a quick one what fertiliser did you buy?

What do you water it with? the care label on mine says rainwater. Don't know if you do already but, just a thought.

Dek I also forgot to mention that normally rainwater to water citrus trees
