  • Homemade bug killer?

I seem to have a bit of a black and white fly infestation. Can anyone recommend a good homemade recipe to use ? I've heard garlic good but not sure how best to make or apply it.

I've used a washing liquid solution for greenfly to good effect, but not had much luck with it on blackfly.
My Dahlias had a touch of black fly last year, a puff of ant powder kept them at bay for a while.

On what? Where? Outside? Under glass?
Leave it a week and you'll have a ladybird infestation and they will eat all your aphids.

Outside on my tomatoes - black fly (I think. Black things with wings on upper side of leaves and black spots under side .

White fly under mesh protecting brassicas from butterflies and pigeons.

Hoverfly and ladybird larvae will get the blackfly on the toms. Whitefly are a nuisance on brassicas, I get them too, but they don't really do much damage. Every once in a while I wave one of those yellow sticky cards over the brassicas, at the same time giving them a shake, which catches a lot of the little beggars.

I had green aphids on the plum tree and this worked for me.

            4 litres of water
2 teaspoons of green fairy liquid
2 teaspoons of any vegetable oil (I used rapeseed oil)

Also supposed to kill White fly, Green fly, Spider mite & Leaf miner.

You can and I have make an effective insecticide by boiling up cigarette ends - it is extremely poisonous and quite probably illegal these days.

I think any sort of spray or 'bug killer' should be a last resort, not a starting point.

Companion planting, wildlife friendly gardening, and encouraging insects like hoverflies and ladybirds has worked for me. Not overnight, but it has worked

Calendula Marigolds, Tagetes French Marigolds, Poached Egg Plants, Borage, Nasturtiums, Lavender etc

I planted chives in amongst the beans last year and found this kept the aphids off and the chives have also had the same effect this year.

Also had some small sunflowers planted in same row as beans and noticed the aphids returned when I cut the sunflowers down.

I would never use those fly traps in the greenhouse.
The bees will become trapped on these as well.
Washing up liquid spray, garlic spray, and companion planting will sort it.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.
You will find yourself a partner,
In the glory of the garden.

I'd rather use UV electric fly trap. It kills flies with electricity, without using any chemicals which might be harmful for plants. The only disadvantage is that it doesn't kill larvae. But garlic spray is good for that purpose as well.
