  • Bee nesting?

    Hi

Ive just noticed what i assume are a pair of bees going into a terracotta pot i have a dianthus in.
They are takng bits of leaves in.

What can i do ...should i do anything?

I'd leave them to it but, maybe, move it out of the way of the dog?

Probably a leaf cutting bee https://www.rhs.org.uk/advice/profile?PID=829
Good for pollination and harmless unless disturbed. Sting not as powerful as "normal" bee.

Leave em to it - don't over-water the pot - probably solitary bees - they lay an egg, take in some green-stuff for the larva to feed on then - go off somewhere-else to repeat the process.

They won't be at it long - couple of days, then off else-where - I get them in the walls of my cottage and also in bits of bamboo, if the hole is the right size.

How lovely. Any idea how long it takes to get new little bees?

be a lot of info on the net about their life cycle I'd think - I'm not sure how many types there are in this country, but if you start with googling "solitary bees" it'll probably take you a life time to read it all. :-)

I looked up the net and all say that the bees will pupate over the winter and emerge next spring.

A couple of days ago I spotted a bee at the end of a plastic windowsill at my Cottage. She was there again yesterday, taking stuff in to a hole accessing the hollow sill, where part of the end-cap had come off. It always brings a smile to my face when I see nature taking advantage of some modern construction. It also goes to show if you're not too tidy and leave things a bit down-at-heel, sometimes it provides opportunities for life to get a grip in the cracks.

                  Happy Gardening :-)
