Alys to the rescue

My mum turns 60 in June and we want to get her a plant and a planter for her birthday.

My question for Alys is: is there something she would recommend for my mum. She/I is open to any suggestions, but it will have to be kept in a pot.

If it helps. I think the pot will go by her front door, which is fairly sunny.

Happy Birthday to your mum! I have mint in pots by my front door; I like the smell as you brush past on the way in. I used to have a lovely, large Lemon verbena that smells absolutely divine when you crush the leaves (like lemon bonbons) and has lovely delicate flowers. You can use the leaves in tea and it likes both sun and partial shade. It does like very low temperatures, but being next to a house is probably sheltered enough for it. It does very well in a pot.
