Have access to an ikea tall cd case - dark wood. Thought it might look good along side the house to house pea shoots and the like.

My mister is worried is might be varnished/treated with some nasties. Will it be safe to use? If so, will I need to line it first?

Varnish can be pretty toxic so I’d line it with an old compost bag. Poke some holes through the plastic for drainage and the soil will be kept away from anything too unpleasant. I use a CD case to grow succulents (it wasn’t varnished)—it works very well.
