May 2011 - Lablab beans

Hey guys

Was reading this months edition when i stumbled upon LabLab beans lol (page 17). I think they look different and quiet interesting and wouldnt mind it as an addition to my own plot.

I was just wondering if anyone has grown them before i.e. how did they get on? what did they taste like? and if possible where to buy other than the suggested link in the magazine?

I've tried them a couple of times now. Slow to get going and never even got as far as flowering before it got too cold. However I've seen them looking impressive at Wisley so will persevere. Don't know who the magazine suggests but I've had them from Beans and Herbs and Hardy's

No I haven't, but I tried the UK soya bean (Ustie) for a few years running and it wasn't very good. Here's a lablab grower: Lablab beans - for Nick - GardenBanter.co.uk

Chickpeas are surprisingly easy to grow: try and get the "black" (actually dark brown) one from an ethnic food store, it does better than the more commonly eaten large white one

No great success with Lablab for me either - I think they need a long hot season.

They're a really pretty dwarf plant that doesn't need staking. The only BUT is you only get 2 peas per pod, so they're a faff to shell (enlist child labour if you have any)

I've bought some of these to try this year, sounds like I need to get them going. They look a lovely plant, quite pretty.
