Twitter is micro-blogging after all, the same principle as "standard" blogging which a fair number of fellow grapes partake in. There is an art to expressing one's self in just 140 characters.
I think with anything, at first glance it's seldom that you get the full perspective or appreciation of how anything works.
Twitter works a bit like a party - you walk in, and possibly don't know many people there, you just walk around listening to people chatting away and for those that have nothing you are interested in, you simply walk on by. However, during the course of the evening you will stumble upon a conversation that sparks your interest, or you feel you have something to say. You speak up and all of a sudden you are joining in the conversation. That particular conversation draws to its natural close, and you dissipate off into smaller groups. One of the people you have just been talking to introduces you to someone else who shares your interests/opinions, another chat starts.
before you know it, you're networking.
I've used it to promote one of the businesses I currently work for, telling folks of special offers we have coming up on our website or at the branches. Using weblinks to direct people to specific areas of the site. The link can be monitored and managed using something like bitly (https://bitly.com/) we can then see which promotions work and which don't quite easily, and more importantly, for free.
A few years ago when a pal of mine introduced me to Twitter I was quite disparaging towards it, favouring Facebook at the time as the more useful tool, however over the course of time I've found it to be very useful, engaging and diverse in its possibilities.
Oh, and it also played a big part in the clear up of London after the rioting morons had gone to bed.
As with anything, there's a lot of dross - but there's a wealth of good stuff too. Even WHSmiths has the same problem.
aside from the fact that it is very good for (certain) businesses (I manage three client accounts on there)
.....I get to talk to Toby Buckland (and have him reply to me direct - whoop, I'm easily pleased!), Matthew Wilson and many other gardeners I admire - oh yes, and Wayne
I find Faceache dull and for the "look at me and what I'm doing" teenies - insufficient security and the whole world knowing your business. I find Twitter allows a greater degree of protection.

Having read all this I decided to join the Twitter brigade.
So now I am a Twitterer. :-)
Don't know much about it but I will learn. I was a bit rigid aobut FB until I found that it was the only way to keep in touch with my family in USA.
I know I now have an @something something name. Is this the name I give to people so they can twit at me? :-)
It said on the Twitter website that it was going to download the application to my HTC...and would you believe it, it has just started to do that.
