Thanks for all the info, I have only been using this site for a week and WOW, what a knowledge base everyone has, its amazing and great to learn so much. Thanks Grapes .
Re using shavings with horse poop.. I used some last year and never again as my crops werent so good and the soil seems heavier now. Will go in search of cow poop and suggest to the allotment committee that we grow comfrey near the car park away from the plots! Then everyone wins.passionate about plants

Why have I never thought of this before? There are some Welsh Black cattle that graze on the Tywi salt marsh but, when the tide is right, wander along the beach into the sand dunes and hide amongst the black thorn scrub to scare the wits out of passers by with their heavy breathing! When the tide comes in again, they head back to their marshland leaves plentiful evidence of their holiday in the dunes. Next time I'm there, I'll take my sandcastle bucket and spade and bring their leftovers back to my garden on the cliff. Beats the .... out of collecting seaweed!

The author discusses all the pros and cons, all the different loo designs you could have. You can build something that actually looks like a normal loo, or you can be as low-tech as just *look away if you're squeamish* pooping into newspaper, wrapping it up and putting it in a compost heap.

Measure the small amount of composted manure necessary to produce fertilizer of the desired strength. 1 tsp. per gal. (3.8 liters) is approximately equivalent to commercial fertilizer mixed at 1/10 tsp. per gal. (3.8 liters). 2.5 tsp. per gal. (3.8 liters) is approximately equivalent to commercial fertilizer mixed at 1/4 tsp. per gal. (3.8 liters). 5 tsp. per gal. (3.8 liters) is approximately equivalent to commercial fertilizer mixed at 1/2 tsp. per gal. (3.8 liters).
Mix the manure with at least 1 cup (236 ml) of water, and allow it to steep overnight or longer.
Strain the liquid, then add enough water to make 1 gal. (3.8 liters) of fertilizer solution.
Rather than dink with small batches, I tend to buy a bag of chicken manure and a bag of cow

Not a tip as such, but I accidentally knocked the tip off the growing flower stem of one of my orchids (before any buds had formed). Thought I had done for it, but instead it started to make branches off the stem, so instead of having one long stem of flowers that hangs over to one side and pulls the pot over, I have an elegant pyramid of seven flower stems branching off one main stem and carrying between them 47 flowers. And it's been flowering since November.
So next time, I'm going to pinch out the growing tip deliberately to test if this was just a fluke, because it's far prettier.Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
Endless wonder.
