Just a thought John,if you don't want the "cover gifts",have you considered the download version of the magazine, that's quite a lot cheaper than the paper version.

I love the magazine. I got given a gift subscription for Christmas so it's been extra great as free, 😀 but I will defiantly be continuing with the subscription next year.
Also I think the seeds are great, a nice variety, and I get to grow things I would never normally try.
A bit sad i know but I get excited when the next edition is due in the post, can't wait to see what seeds I have to try 😊

Given the fact that the mag is just under 20% advertising I reckon the publishers are raking it in and certainly could offer it at a lower price ans still give freebies.
One other fact I have noticed over the years is the sub-standard articles presumably written by amateurs who know little about gardening.
Articles are also repeated several times over a 12-18 month period with no updating of information. I know this as I keep mags for years to scan and copy the better articles for posting out to my allotment members.
Time to flog it on to a publisher who knows about gardening.

I think that if you get any magazine for a long period of time you notice that some of the articles are repeated but seasonal things like gardening are particularly susceptible to this as certain things do need to be done at certain times of the year. Also new readers are being picked up all the time so you can't assume that everybody now knows more than this time last year. I accept this so change what I buy every now and again, it's also nice to read different authors as they have a different perspective on things. If a mag is not for you then you don't have to buy it but it's worth remembering that you are using a forum funded by that mag and using it for free so don't bite the hand and all that.......

Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.

Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

Every year we, on the Forum, are asked the same questions (about blight, growing parsnips etc) and the answers are always basically the same. As Alison said, gardening is a cyclical - you can't rewrite the seasons because you're bored with the answers.
There are other magazines and other gardening Forums - the choice is yours.

I can’t say I have ever read an article that I would consider sub-standard, I might not always agree with the author but that will always remain my prerogative. Some of the articles are indeed written by “Amateur Gardeners” but as far as I am concerned that is a quintessential element that should be maintained as it’s about their enjoyment of gardening and the trials and tribulations they face.
Of course duplication on a topic will occur or indeed a variation on the theme, but like many I have read and learnt a lot over my 60 years but can only remember a fraction of it, I wouldn’t use the vine if that wasn’t the case ….You have my vote GYO

John...as you scan and send it to your allotment members you might want to pay for a licence to do so
