Not sure if this is the right forum but here goes.

I completed the readers survey which was ok until the last page. I think that someone should consider whether asking for someones date of birth and then making it available to other entities is appropriate.

If you think about it the date of birth is used for many security purposes. Yes i accept that we give the details out willy nilly but when the survey asks which age group you are in why does someone want to know the exact date of birth?

Out of interest for others I tried 00/00/0000 and was told it was not a valid date. I therefore completed todays date.

Well they have probably missed it this year Bigmallly. Postie came at 10.30 this morning and I was disappointed not to get one. Mind you I didn't complete the survey until 9 this evening, so I can't remember why I was disappointed!

I couldn't get to the last page - as I hadn't answered any questions
One of the first questions was which age bracket are you in so why they need your date of birth I know not! The question that irritated me was "What is your household income?". What relevance does that have to gardening unless its to target people with lots of money to spend on unnecessary gadgets.
Anyway, I haven't completed the survey.

The really funny thing is that I don't even have a lawn!

Veggiechicken I had no difficulty completing the income part as I always show the maximum.

The other bit that I did not answer was my home telephone number. For anyone that is interested my number is 00000000000.

Having thought about it another question that was not really thought through was about which other gardening magazines you read. Well I don't read any and left it blank. I could not proceed so ticked the box for "other" and put none in the comment box.

So if such little thought or consideration is put into the preparation of these surveys then I am not sure i will complete anymore surveys.

I often give 01/01/YYYY where year of my birth tells them my age group. People have no need of more information than that. Other secure databases will have my actual DOB for banks, insurance and pension type stuff. Online energy, online purchasing or mobile phone is 01/01/YYYY so that I can remember what lie I told them ;-) You might use a different date like the month of her birthday as DD the month of your mums as MM and your actual year as YYYY so that you can be consistent and remember without giving too much away.
Also having a throw away email address or two is handy when you really have to tell someone to get something, you can forward valid emails to your main address without compromise and junk the rest or abandone completely a compromised throw away email address. EXAMPLE 'warwickplot23@gmail.com' or make up your own.
I hate giving stuff to peolple I don't know and will probably never have dealings with again.
