  • Growing some early tomatoes - 2019

    2018 thread at https://www.growfruitandveg.co.uk/gr...8-a_95631.html

Dig out your seeds and propagators - its worth a gamble. You too could be eating homegrown tomatoes before those who grow by the rulebook.

I will be sowing my 2 early Shirleys as usual in the first week of January. These will start under lights and be moved to the sitting room windowsill when they get too tall. They will be stopped at 2 or 3 trusses and spend their whole lives on the windowsill. I expect to harvest the first tomatoes from these in mid June. I'll also be sowing Balconi red and yellow in early February - these usually beat the Shirley and produce the first ripe fruit in the 2nd half of May.

I'm in! I'll sow a bush Tom, they don't get so leggy as cordons. Maybe Latah.

still eating this years toms to think about sowing more, about 6kg still to go. Then about 50kg in the out-house so not sure if I need to sow any next year, maybe a couple of gardeners delight.

when do you plan on getting ripe tomatoes using this method?

May-June for plants grown in the house, as opposed to August onwards for more conventionally grown tomatoes. If you move the plants to a greenhouse or outside when the weather warms up the fruit will ripen later.
