What I did today 2018

I've not posted in this or last years thread of 2017 but will endevour to 'Do better in 2018

So to kick off....Today I sowed more Onions in the Prop'.....Kelsae, Mammoth Red, Mammoth Improved white, Golden Bear, Globo and Santaro.
these will be a Comparison to the same varieties sown on 31st Oct 2017.

Also sowed more Oriental Salad leaves mix .

First sowings of 2018 - always makes me happy

Sowed Carrots (Amsterdam 3/Sprint) and Rainbow radish in MFBs in GH.
Tied in the Bijou Mangetout in the GH which are about 5' tall now.
Dead headed/cutback the geraniums in the GH.
Planted 2 Christmas Hellebores (20p each from Morries).

Had a chat to the Daffodil that flowered at Christmas.
Spotted the snowdrop buds in the grass.
Picked some Rocket for dinner.

Made a start on my 2018 project to remove the carpet from my plot. Managed to lift about 10’x4’ (2 layers) before rain stopped play.
Very glad that I checked the council tip New Year (not)opening before I hauled a pile of wet carpet into the car boot!

Got some onion seeds into the propagator: Dulce de Fuentes (a new one for me), plus Sturon, Globo and Red Baron. Lifted the last of my chrysanthemums from the veg bed and started cleaning them up and boxing into fresh compost.

Finally got round to collecting the leaking water butts from the allotment to bring home for repair. I need to make the most of this rain, to avoid the damage that the dry weather did last March and April.

I'm toying with leaving my chrysanthemums that aren't in pots, where they are.

I am only growing for cut flowers and hopefully this shoul give me an earlier crop? The potted ones will be brought inside for cuttings.

Some varieties are tough enough to treat as normal hardy herbaceous perennials. I've got a couple like that, but a lot of mine struggle to deal with the cold clay soil and the slugs and snails. If you've got lighter soil you could well be fine.

But even so, I do find that I get stronger plants and better flowers by starting from clean new cuttings each year. I think it's because the pests and diseases find it much harder to take hold.

So I bring one of each variety into the greenhouse in the winter, scrape and wash off as much of the soil as I can, cut off all the greenery except for a stick to hold onto, put them into deep trays with John Innes no 1 around the roots and wait for nice new shoots to appear for cuttings.

As well as doing that today, I sowed some cauliflower "Mayflower" and pricked out some winter salad mix into trays in the greenhouse.

I intend to have a go at Chrys's this coming year, never grown proper ones, so I'll be picking your brains when I find a supply. Just want a couple to grow in pots to start with, my wife loves them.

I transferred my hostas to tall containers(specifically made via palette wood) as my rabbits are partial to the leaves. I filled the bases with rabbit litter as I didn't have enough compost. That's them transferred at least.

I took the old containers over to the plot where I intend to plant 2 blueberry bushes.

More veg scraps/tea/egg shells dumped in compost dalek.

Went back to work. Stared out my office window at the rainy gloom. Wished I could have been outside in the rainy gloom at the allotment. From "ho! ho! ho!" to "ho-hum", in just a few (very) short days...

Down potted a Basket of Fire ready to overwinter under lights,
Sieved and Re generated surplus compo with BFB and sowed Spinach baby leaves.

Sowed 1 x MFB of Nantes Pelleted seed + 1 x MFB Eskimo (Natural seed) Into Ex Potato compost with added BFB etc, Now under lights with the Chillie at approx 14 C.

Bottled 12 bots of Elderflower wine.( Erm there was 12 ....but I had to check it was ok .....
be fair ...)

Its really too early, but last year I got really far ahead by seeding a cucumber plant this early, and trying to give it lots of light.

Im trying again now!

very sensible... you must keep a check on your stock...

I'm in the bah humbug at work stage, but I shall be down on the plot on Saturday - if nothing else to occupy the small person whilst his birthday preparations are made
