Winter vegetables

WW, it almost IS winter.
Broccoli, sprouts, cabbages etc were sown back in April/May, and planted out in July.

Some salad stuff will grow, you can pop in some onion sets and garlic for overwintering.
Sure some others will have more ideas.

Try a trip to your local garden centre and see if they have any plug palnts left

Maybe not things to eat immediately but definitely veg to get you started with an early crop next year.

I'm still learning too and, flushed with my success from this year, I'm eagerly trying to read up on how to nurish my soil again and get the order right for next years crop.
I always seem to be playing catch up.

Japanese onion sets,garlic and shallots should be in the garden centres now!

There are also overwintering caulis and broccoli in the garden centres. Easier to plant!

thanks for the ideas will have to visit the garden center. I just haven't done winter veg ever. so winter is new to me. LOL will see what i can do.

I'm still clearing my allotment so won't have anything in this winter, but Organic Plants - Home Page sell plug plants if you've missed the boat with sowing anything this year.

I'm planning all the things I'd like to grow next year, and plan to have stuff in the beds over the winter too - the only thing I'm wondering is when do you get time to dig over the bed / cover with manure etc??! Should you leave some areas clear and give the soil a "rest", or put a green manure in over winter?

The Real Seeds website has a few Oriental veggies which can be planted now.

You can also sow chard for winter cropping.

There's one heck of a selection at our local Garden Centre! I was in there today just to get some onion sets (came away with 200 mixed)

and spotted:-

Spring cabbage plants
PSB plants
White sprouting broccoli plants
winter cauliflowers
Two types of lettuce plants
Spring onion plants

And all that was just with a cursory glance..........so there's no shortage of stuff to fill up your allotment...............at a price!
