    Help with daft birds

    Ok so the dove nest on the outside light not a problem, the dove nest on the sky dish not horrendous but what the ruddy 'ell do I do about the pied wagtails now building a nest in one of my strawberry pots?

    I saw the pair last night and thought they were pinching the green strawbs, then hubby said they were carrying nesting material so thought no more of it. Went out this morning and as I got near one of them shot out so I had a look. They have made a hole in the corner and are now lining it. I thought after this morning they would abandon it but no they are still lining it. The container is a wall trough type, waist high to me (head height for my oldest) close to the back door and next to a well used path. I really don't know what to do for the best. Any ideas?

    Soundsa bit harsh, but its better their disturbed now rather than when they have chicks , so if you use the area a lot then id try and move them on , im sure if their only building they will start elsewhere..Of course if your heart wont let you do this say goodbye to the area for the next six weeks

      Personally I would leave it if it's not going to trouble you. I have blackbirds nesting in my wisteria, a few feet from my kitchen door, I'm always going passed and in and out of the kitchen and I drop food by the kitchen door for them. They recently had chicks. I also often have birds nesting in my grape vine which grows along the back of the house. One year thrushes nested above my living room window and I could watch them going in to feed the chickes. They didn't seem too worried about me.

        Waist height...easy for a cat to jump up onto and hook out the babies????

        If so I'd disturb them now.

          They're doing no harm. I wouldn't worry at all about using the area. They will have clocked your activities and obviously do not see you and yours as a threat, or very simply they wouldn't be nesting there.

          It will be lovely to see them, coming and going, and hopefully successfully raising a brood.
          Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.
          Everything is worthy of kindness.

            Thanks for the comments I am still none the wiser. I shall leave it up to them what they decide although I do fear I will have some dead plants in several weeks. Cats shouldn't be an issue, they would have to get past fred the whistling gnome, the security light (night-time) and me and the hosepipe. Yes I don't tend to tolerate other peoples cats in my garden especially so close to the house.

              No use asking me, I seem to have my own share of daft birds.
              For yours try putting a couple of biggish pots of stuff either side of the nest so people have to walk a little away from it.

                Two fat wood pigeons, nesting in my grapevine, immediately above the chimnea stove pipe.

                  I forgot the pheasant in front of my compost bin. She wasn't very well hidden after a couple of weeks as I weed killed the patch a week before she nested

                  The pied wagtails have finished the nest but haven't taken up residence. I have heard some birds making several nests before deciding but no idea if wagtails are one of them

                    Hope you just left them. Should never disturb nesting birds. If they have chose to nest there, they will be fine.

                      Thats easier said than done. I use the back door at least twice a day, the planter in question is 3m away at most. As someone said sometimes it is best to disturb them asap so they find somewhere else more suitable before they use up their energy laying and sitting on eggs. However, thank you goes to the person that said they are used to your actions.

                      So just to let you know.....she is very good. She is sat on four eggs and she even allowed me to give one end of the pot a drink. Believe me it needed it the plants were so wilty she was no longer hidden. Hubby and my oldest have both walked past (even though there are chairs there) and she just watches but doesn't fuss. I will post some pics at some point.

                          In all fairness I did make a nuisance of myself for two days to make sure she really wanted to nest there. Like most things there is no one right thing to do

                            I'm sorry, but every time I see the title of this thread I have a little snigger.

                            But seriously, you're really lucky to have the chance to watch the brood develop. Nice one.

                              I just thought I would bump this thread so Martin can have another snigger Although I didn't realise until it was mentioned

                              Oh and I have pics

                              So this is me at the back door and just there is the planter they picked



                              This is the nest 1 day after building, they hadn't lined it at this point.
