I've just bought the lovely cookbook 'Arabella Boxer's Garden Cookbook' - I don't think there is a single vegetable not covered by one of her recipes.
In her introduction she says:
"As meat grows ever more expensive, my enthusiasm for it has waned still further. Contrary to the general propaganda urging us to experiment with cheaper cuts and learn to make them into sustaining meals ...." Could have been written this week
The book was written in 1974 - was there a recession/depression then as well - I was courting and therefore not interested!
She also comments that on fish she would rather buy expensive salmon from time to time, rather than buying cheap cod three times a week - so some things have changed.
Two recipes I won't be trying are cold lentil soup and turnip souffle!
