I'd put a screen up, and grow something up that - i.e. a trellis - still on your land, then there can't be able come back.

Or....the simplistic thing would be to write them a letter and ask!...or phone.
My thoughts would be a blanket ban no.
If they ok'd it, then how do they know if you are going to be responsible enough not to plant something daft like a Russian Vine?
It's easier to say no, never than have someone regularly checking up on posts.
I'd go with Chris's idea of a trellis"Nicos, Queen of Gooooogle" and... GYO's own Miss Marple

Checked with a mate from National Grid, if its one of theirs even if its on your property the answer is no to any alteration at all, not even a bird box.Potty by name Potty by nature.

As above!
Most of these companies are the same, they rarely put in an appearance! But eventually they will send someone round to check on it and if there's anything there it'll get ripped down.Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.

A neighbour grew a lovely climbing rose up a pole support, on his property. Took them 2 or 3 years to notice it was there, but when they did they made him cut it down!Pain is still pain, suffering is still suffering, regardless of whoever, or whatever, is the victim.

I agree with Chris. If the pole is unsightly a bird-box is not going to beautify it anyway, not even BM's "presents for men" (don't you just love that, ladies?) feeder. Put up a sturdy free-standing trellis using a couple of posts, grow a pretty climber up it and put a bird box or feeder on one of the posts.
You could put up some just a bit wider than the pole, doesn't need to be a huge trellis that would cut out your light.
Location - Leicestershire - Chisit-land
Endless wonder.
