  • Where to plant Globe Artichokes

    Hi all,
My next door neighbour gifted me 3 globe artichoke plants yesterday. To be able to plant this right away I have space in 2 of my beds. One where I am planting sweetcorn tomorrow and the other where I am planting carrots/beetroot/parsnips/onions. I have read on this forum that Globe Artichoks needs good sunlight and also that since they grow as tall as us they can cast shade on neighbouring plants. Also what is the minimum gap between each plant?
Any advice on where I could plant the globe artichoke plants? Plant is to plant this tomorrow morning so any immediate tips is most welcome!
Also once planted can these plants be moved to another location? or don't they like being moved.

Ok...Globe Artichokes need a bit of looking after. They do not like their roots getting wet so if you are on waterlogged land or clay you need to dig a hole then pour gravel or crocks in the bottom. They will grow about 6ft in summer but they die back in winter so in autumn you need to cut them back to about 8in. then for the first year cover the crown in bracken or fleese or straw to protect the crown. After 5 years split the crown like you would with Rhubarb.

I have mine about 3 foot apart.
