  • French bean supports?

    Do I need them?
(I've never grown beans before so know nowt about them)
We have about 360 days of wind per year . The first year here I made complicated structures with tripods of canes and lots of string to support my courgettes, but after that I just let them blow over and flop down the sides of the pots. Didn't seem to impact the fruiting.
Would french beans be the same or will they just snap if I don't support them?
The problem with rounded personalities is they don't tesselate.

Depends on if they are dwarf or climbers.

    Climbers - yes
Dwarf - if really windy 4 canes around the block with twine at a foot off the ground would help them against the wind.

      Thanks Zaz.

A bit like my Heath Robinson style courgette supports then...

I'll have to go googling - So far I know Jacob's Cattle is supposed to be a dwarf and Tamilla a climber, but after that I'm lost!

And some dwarf beans are in fact short climbers If I'm not sure, I tend to see how they go early on: if they seem to be sending out 'feelers' then they're going to need canes.

If you don't use canes they will scramble along the ground so the slugs can eat them
