  • Growing Rasps like Grape vines...

Hi all, was watching country file last night and saw how they were clasping one "cane" from each vine horizontally to the wires. I presume this is to get the new shoots to grow vertically and uniform like. I wonder if this would work with raspberries or if its best to just let them do as they please?

Its my first year with rasps and I know I have planted them far to close together but would still like them to look nice and get a fair crop if possible.

    Any suggestions and experiences welcome

You can't really train raspberries: their canes are straight & stiff, compared to brambles & grapes

You can train rasps when the branches grow as they are green and flexible. Horizontal growth leads to lots of leaves and a tangled mess. Did it once only.

I have raspberry, blackberry, gooseberry, redcurrant & blackcurrant against a wall & I have put wires up in the hope of growing them along the wires. Not sure if it will work but it gave me something to do.
