  • Raspberry Cane Care

Hi, following on from a recent thread*, I ordered 10 Joan J Autumn fruiting raspberry canes from Blackmoor Nursery as advised and they arrived Saturday afternoon whilst I was on the allotment.

Unfortunately, I was unable to prepare an area for them in time (was at a Christening yesterday & it rained all day) so they are still wrapped up in the parcel in which they were delivered.

I won't be able to get on the allotment again until Saturday morning, so in the meantime please can you advise what I should do with the canes? Would it be ok to pot them up in a container until the weekend, or are they better off left unwrapped in the packaging?

    Many thanks,
    Paul

    * I responded on the previous thread yesterday morning with some images, but unfortunately it didn't post as was awaiting Moderator approval, so sorry for creating this new post, but I need to know what to do as I don't want to throw away £18 worth of canes!

I've had mine in a bucket of damp soil since they were delivered at least a month ago... I still haven't quite got the planting area cleared. I would unwrap them and make sure the roots are somehow kept moist until the weekend. They'll be ok, i think they're pretty indestructible.

I wrapped the roots on mine in damp newspaper in a carrier bag - the newspaper was still damp a week later and they're coming through ok - they might need a drink before hand though if they're dry from transit

I had my Tulameen in temporary containers for a while before I cleared their permanent home.

If it's only a shoty time then as long as you can water them they should be OK, but pot them up if you think it's going to take you longer.
