Hi Can anyone tell me if it is a bad idea to have different breeds sharing a hen-house? I have 2 Black Rocks and 2 Light Sussex in an omlet and the Light Sussex seem miserable.

Keeping different breeds together?

As long as they have enough space - but you'll probably find with any mixed group of hens that some breeds are more feisty than others, and are therefore further up the pecking order. Black Rocks are often the top dogs in the flock - as long as no-one's getting severely picked on then they should all be fine together.
Just noticed it's your first post - welcome to the Vine!Last edited by Birdie Wife; 26-07-2008, 10:28 PM.

Hi Lulama
I've got 3, each a different breed, and they all get on fine. One is bottom of the pecking order, but there wil always be 'top' hens and looked-down-on hens, so as long as they're not getting seriously injured I'm sure they're fine.
My chicken book advises at least 1 square metre run space per chicken.
They might take a while to settle down into their pecking order too.
