Dear lynda, it depends what youre requirements are. if its egg production only choose a standard hybrid brown hen , most will lay an egg a day for about 18 months / 2 years i have a breed called Lohmanns. If it utility you want(meat and eggs) try the utility register in Practical Poultry. Bear in mind a utility/pure breed will stop laying during the winter months, are normally twice to three times the price of a hybrid and coupled with not laying during the winter could prove expensive.
but brown ones are boring colours lol yeah i want eggs, and the boys will be dinner, but really i want pets who pay for themselves at least in some way, yes not buying eggs would be useful, but i don't eat many, son does though. ...... and telling them apart would be useful ...... hopefully will get some ex bats at some point, but really i'm looking for inspiration, as to what others have and what they are like as little people.
still think i want a silkie and a frizzle, cos they are cute, anyway, for now gotta see what hatches, cos i may have wonder birds in my incubator
see the thing is, if i don't get enough eggs ....... thats just a good excuse to get more chooks
I've only got 6 hens, but like the variety of different colours etc. If you're just going for black and white, though, we have a Barred Plymouth Rock, Light Sussex and Black Orpington. Sadly the Orp isn't in lay yet and the Light Sussex is new so hasn't settled yet, though we have already had one pure white egg which has got to have come from her!
We also have a Buff Sussex (very good layer & a good size for utility), Blue Splash Orpington (she is a surprisingly consistent layer, except when she had a cold!) and a new Bovans Nera hybrid.
I love them all - wouldn't be without any of them!
lol .... you can get semi permanent vegetable dyes .... i seen someone do a poodle pink on telly yesterday ...... this could be fun i could fill the ducks pond up, so every time they go in, they come out a different colour
