  • Dorky chick and ISA Brown died overnight!

My Dorking that I hatched from an egg has died overnight. One of my old ISA Browns died also and another isn't looking too well....I think she'll be dead by morning.

I'm assuming that colds and flu affect chickens the same as humans and the young and the old are most vunerable?

The ISA was about 4 years old and the Dorky a mere 16 weeks.

The ISA browns I don't feel so bad about because they've had a good innings.............the Dorky has left me gutted.

I phoned about some replacement chooks but the guy only wanted to sell trio's and I've got enough cockerels.

Oh dear Snadger, that's so sad

Don't want to scaremonger, but as you lost 2 together, and another one isn't looking too good, what's the symptoms of bird flu?

Aww snadger - noo thats not fair?

Is this the dorking that was in isolation?

I don;t know what to suggest I have never had a chook die from a cold, they usuallly seem to perk up after a day or two when medicated, but then never had one so young with it, my old cockeral had a cold and he was ok after a week and he is 6!

Best remedy for colds is respite - its garlic that this the active ingredient so garlic tablets are just as good - obvioulsy they are for humans so only a quarter of one. I use Dorwest herbs garlic and fenugreek tablets and use 1/2 tablet once a day always seemed to do the trick!

I wonder if there could be something else - any otehr symptoms snadger?

I'm thinking "something else" too ........ I don't think they would die from an ordinary cold. Like Bramble, we too had a cock chick earlier this year with a cold, who was well again within a week, and is now happy as larry under the apple trees, on his way to becoming a lovely roast dinner!

                  Sorry Snadge,that's horrid for you!{{x}}

Is there any chance there's mites in the coop? The girl we lost a week or so ago we think was due to mites...she was the only one that insisted on sleeping in the pophole(a little ply cube box).I thought we'd tackled everywhere, but when we removed the box the underneath was absolutely covered in them. Her comb was almost white when I let her out in the morning.

Sorry again & hope you can find the cause & hopefully stop you worrying too much about the others.x

Oh no, Snadger, I'm so sorry, especially about the Dorking. It must be difficult to pull yourself out of the doldrums when something like this happens.
Into each life some rain must fall........but this is getting ridiculous.

Aw what a shame! The ISA at 4 was a reasonable age but the youngster should have been good for years. Were they together?

They were in seperate runs but both runs share one mesh fence............one either side!

No mites.............I checked poor Dorky over before disposing of her and she was fully feathered and clean as a whistle.

I'm beginning to wonder if I've brought something in with the two Minorca's I bought from auction lately?
They have no symptoms but could be carriers I suppose?

It just seems coincidental that these troubles have just started since they arrived.
