  • Fox Attack (I think!)

Came down to let our chickens out to free range this morning only to find that something (something very clever or very lucky) had slipped the latch for the eglu droppings tray and pulled it right out from under the eglu. Had managed to pull one chicken (Martha) out through the gap and had injured another (Donna) so badly that we had to take her to the vets to be put down. Very depressing day! I knew foxes were cunning, but this is going to new lengths. Have wedged a heavy, metal wheelbarrow against the back of the eglu to try and stop it happening again tonight and us losing our only chicken left (Rose).

Having had an eglu, I would not think it was a fox. Perhaps something like a ferret or mink perhaps?

Big hugs, I lost 5 girls to foxes about a month ago so know how heart breaking it is

You do need to think of getting more girls to keep poor Rose company though

Never test the depth of the water with both feet

Just spoken to OH and she told me there's a new type of eglu called the go... we had the original type. What type you got?

So sorry to hear about your girls, it's really really distressing when they are injured.I really feel for you.xxx How is the one you have left? She'll be quite disorientated about being alone.

We have the original. It was very strange. I don't think a mink or ferret would have been strong enough; the poo tray was pulled way back. I can't imagine how something even managed to open the catch - I find it difficult myself sometimes!!

It has not been a great day - horrible waiting to have Donna put down - she was our favourite and the first one to lay.

We will get some friends for Rose as soon as we can. We all felt really sorry for her today, she was looking for her friends all morning.

a friend of mine has installed electric fencing around their eglu, that was one cunning fox to get in, very distressing for you.

sorry to hear this I hate foxes they wiped out about 8 of mine earlier in the year I put a trap down but all I seem to catch is the local cat who has had numerous buckets of water to try to disuade it but to no avail.Good luck it's a steep learning curve and the fox will keep testing you

We had a koi carp pond with a few very large fish, we think a mink came along and pulled out one of the planters (something both myself and OH had only just managed to pull out) and got hold of a koi about 20 inches by 10 inches. the planter weighed a ton and was about 2 foot by one foot, not to mention the fact that it was sodden.

sorry to hear about your chucks, it is a moment you just dont want to think about
