Charlotte and her little bird "Lucky" won third at the Whitchurch and Malpas Show with her Quail Coloured Barbu D'Anver - her first show too!

She also entered a Millefleur Barbu D'Uccle "Jenny Any Dots" but it didnt get placed. The bird was young and not 100% the right shape but Charlotte wanted to give it a day out!

She has now sent off for the Stafford County Show entry - there's no stopping her now!

well the next show is May 1st at Oswestry, but registrations have closed so we have probably missed that one, however, the Stafford County Show is the next nearest to us so we be going to that one.

We could go to all sorts of shows, but really dont want to travel the birds hours on end just to go to a show.

Shellingtons - showing is great fun, but what a load of work! It starts a week before the show with washing the bird in warm water with a small amount of baby shampoo in it. then you work all the feathers and clean them. then you scrub the feet and nails with a toothbrush to clean them all out.

towel dry the bird and if its a coolish day, you will need to blow dry it with a hair dryer.
careful as the hair dryer tends to fluff them up! then when dry, apply some vaseline hand cream to the legs and feet. this stops dirt working back into the scales before the show and also makes the legs look shiny.

Give the bird a good going over with frontline to remove any "hitch hikers" before going to the show. Place the bird into a dry run or cage with dry litter in it away from the wind. Our utility room seemed favourite. During this week switch the bird onto grain as a feed as it hardens up the poo making it less messing on the bird

The day before the show, check all is well. On the day of the show, when you turn up to bench your birds, before you put her in, wipe the feet again with vaseline to bring up the shine. Put a small drop of baby oil on the comb and work in to shine it up, do similar to the beak. Then rub the bird all over with a silk hankerchief as this buffs the feathers.

Place into the show cage and off you go. Come back when the judges say you can.

A real palavour but a lot less stressful than showing dogs!

Andi&Di - the last bird in the picture is indeed Jenny Any Dots. She had a good day out but not at her best as we were going to show Willow, and old hand at this showing lark as she is an ex-showbird we picked up from the breeder, but we noticed that she had lost a toe nail and the judges would pull her from the show for that so its wasnt worth taking her. But as we had entered a Millie we had to take a millie so we brought Jenny along for the day out. She only got bathed and prepped friday night so wasnt in the best moods for the show.

Jenny is sweet, I think I'm in love with feathery feet and mad colours, millefluer is lovely.
The little d'anver is nice too, much nicer than the ones at Carlisle, although I never saw the cuckoo, dont know if it wasnt forward or had been sold and gone before I looked at them.

Well, I read this to Morgan and she is now very taken with the whole idea.
"You mean, I can bath the chickens and make them prettier?" She asked all wide eyed.

I think she may want to talk to Charlotte about it, I shall bring her up to the show at Stafford if Charlotte is showing there. And if she doesn't mind chatting to Morgan about it, we have some Birchins which let her do anything with them, they may be a good one to start with.

There are two types of showing for Juniors - tehre is standard showing where you prep teh bird and leave it in a cage - thats when you need a bird that can hold its own in the show ring or there is junior handler - the bird is not so important as the knowledge of the bird, handling ability aswell as the bird as they get points for all 3
