  • Broody Bird ...

Just wondered if any of you chicken lovers could tell me something about broody hens ... one of my chooks has taken to sitting all the time in one of the nesting boxes and when I move her on she seems indignant and bolshy ... her general appearance has changed as well seeming quite puffed out and irritable and some of the other birds seem to round on her and give her a peck or two for good measure ... so question really is 'how long will this behaviour continue, is it to be discouraged and if it is, what can I do to make her change her anti-social behaviour?
peace of mind ... work the land ... connect with nature ... simple

As far as I know, you're supposed to seperate the broody bird from the rest in a small box until it's broodyness has gone away...

Don't quote me on this, I'm sure someone else will be along with good advice soon...

If you want chicks you could separate her and get her some fertile eggs to sit.

If you don't, there is some advice on the thread 'My hens have gone broody-help'

I heard you should sit the bottom of the bird in water! Just a little water, not a full on bath, l read this on eglu help pages. Might be worth a look before you try the water to make sure it is correct as I am about 75% sure this is the answer.

        Good luck.
