  • how many days do crocus flower for?

    Hi all
I have some sweet crocus's which on some years I see and some years I totally miss. I'm just wondering how many days do crocus flower for? Are there any types which flower for slightly longer than the average?

No idea how many days the flowers last but they open and close with the sun - and then they're more obvious.
My favourites are the little Tommasianas ?sp small mauve crocus that self seed and spread through the lawn. The larger crocus don't live long here and the yellow ones are eaten by birds.

Ive got photos of flower buds opening March 1st & leaves left over when the flowers die down 24th March, difficult when you want to mow the lawn, there’s also peas & broad beans starting their growth,I notice the crocus because I’m looking at the growth of these & onions & garlic. The crocus flower when it’s still cold & wet out there, not good gardening weather but good to go out look at the veg then spot the bulbs & take photos, this cluster of bulbs has grown over the years,I should dig them up & divide whatever I find but here’s the photos from those dates ~

Stunning photos mine are nowhere near like that, I have one or two purple ones pop up here and there. No wonder I can't see them. I will have to put some more in and hope that they spread like that.
Good to know about the yellow crocus being eaten by birds, I like the purple and cream ones

The little mauve beauties, they look like they are dancing There is something really nice about crocus's, they always cheer me up. I've just planted some saffron crocus, after taking inspirations from somebody else photo of saffrons in flower on this forum somewhere. I can't remember which thread. I will have to post a photo of mine as they are coming up now

I think mine either started off as one bulb about 17 years ago & it’s carried on growing with more flowers, that little area was grass with crocus dotted about in a naturalised way & that’s the only one left of those ones & it’s got carried away spreading? Unless years ago I moved some bulbs together (when I plant out I sometimes accidentally dig up bulbs & bury them in a pile quickly). But I haven’t dug that area in the last five years or so,I just plant into it without digging,it would be bad to stick a fork through it.

I will try to find a place where they will be undisturbed, though I can't guarantee it I dig up and forget where my bulbs are until they turn up somewhere. Its squirrel central at mine, I had 3 young ones foraging in a single pot of snowdrops yesterday. I though that squirrels didn't like snowdrops

an impossible question to answer precisely, unless you growing them indoors under controlled conditions. The weather at the time of flowering is the reason why only a rough estimate can be given - my stab at it would be about a week on average - but in a warm sunny Spring perhaps 5 days, whereas a cold damp horrible one you might get 10 - quite often I've seen crocus flowers sticking up through an inch of snow, with the odd brave bee getting pollen from them
