  • Quick germination, is it a bad thing??

This is gonna make me sound so thick! One week ago I sowed loads of flower seeds, many of them, dianthus, agastache, chocolate daisy, etc., said the germination was very slow, from 1-4 months , yet all of them have started to sprout, so is that a bad sign? They are in pots in the windowsill (not the kitchen one, so not particularly warm) with the suggested clear plastic bag on top. Any ideas, suggestions? Thanks!!

Maybe you just got lucky? Not big on growing flowers from seeds so can't really help. I think you take the bags off when the seedlings appear to let more light in though.
    Happy Gardening,

I've never heard of flower seed taking 4 months to germinate? Are you sure it didn't say 4 weeks? The idea is to get it to germinate as quickly as possible so as not to lose any to rot or to mice or birds. Your only problems now is keep them out of the cold wind and make sure they get loads of light.
I you'st to have a handle on the world .. but it BROKE!!

I agree with terrier, remove plastic bag. Keep an eye on them, too much direct light and they will become leggy and sprindly. Keep turning the trays as they always grow towards the light.

Thanks all for your advice, I've removed the bags. And yes, they are all labelled as taking ages to germinate, agastache says 1-4 months, chocolate daisy says 4-12 weeks, and so on. Now my problem will be to get enough pots to plant them individually until they can be hardened and put out in the garden!

              I know what you mean.

Can't go near a packet of parsley without talk of long germination times or someone muttering about going to the devil and back three times

My parsley was up and running in a matter of days

Still it makes me wonder whether I'll have to pay for quick germination later, in some strange parsley karma kind of way

Or beginner's luck, David! (Although I wouldn't say my fingers are green: muddy, definitely!)

And same as Maf, I'm afraid I may pay later on, maybe weak leggy seedlings or something, probably quick germination equals premature babies in the plant world!
