My carrots are in a deep pot and also a deep planter, I had read somewhere that they like sandy conditions, so mixed half sand, half John Innes 3 and they have all come up. the ones in the pot were loose seed and the ones in my long planter are seed tapes with a strip of spring onion in between the rows of carrots. I also have parsnip in another deep planter, they are just starting to peep through.

I have had no luck with carrots, tried three sowings and not much luck on any.
Tried a seed tape on one lot and was very disappointed, but had more show than i did with the leek seed tape, not even a peep.
Put it all down to being a new gardener!!!!!!
Spring onions are not alot to write home about.

Lindy, try your carots in pots. I'm growing Parmex in a bread tray, lined with membrane and filled with compost. They germinated great and have great top growth and baby round carrots underneath. Also you could try Early Nantes, or whatever seed you have left, in pots as long as they are deep enough - 8 inches or so. You may not get big crops but you should get something. Good luck.

That's the value of keeping a record Lyndap, so that we can learn from what we did before. Do let's know how the carrots go. I think at the end of the gardening season we should all post how it went - what was good , bad or rotten - then we can all learn from each other.

the carrots i sowed a few days ago have just peeped above the soil, much quicker than expected. sown some yellow, red and more purple ones today and have sown a few in a pot which i will keep in the greenhouse

I've sown carrots at least four times this year, and had not a single one show itself! Thought it was just me, so I'm glad I read this thread. Not to worry though, the tomatoes are going like blazes!!

I have been thinning my prolific row and we have had some decent sized ones to eat. Very sweet when I get to cook them - I could easily just chomp away on them raw.

My problem seems to be the leaves, they always collapse when I water them. I try to water underneath, but they always recover. But the last couple of days they haven't and are lying quite straggly, healthy looking though. Is this a sign of things going wrong?

I know that some of the brassica's can have their germination inhibited with high temeratures I wonder if Carrots are the same as there seems to be a lott of folks suffering at the moment - me included.

As to your droopy leaves JA, it could just be "heat fatigue" fr want of a better word or isn't it hot up there ?

I suppose Nick we are not hitting the temps you are getting south, but warm for up here - 21 degrees WOW!

I had a good check along the row and everything looks healthy, so perhaps it is the heat.

I've had the same problems with my carrots this year, very poor germination. I put mine down to maybe the seed being old as it was a packet I found in the drawer from a year maybe two years ago. I normally plant 3 rows about 3 weeks apart. This year only have one row as rest never grew!

It's my first year growing veg and I made three sewings - one in a raised bed, one in a trug and one in upturned mineral water bottles. The ones in the raised bed all came through really well, despite the cat trying to dig them up early on! The others are much more patchy though with the trug ones barely germinating at all. Unfortunately, I grew them in rich soil and didn't mix sand in, so even the raised bed ones are all forked - they taste delicious nevertheless.

Didn't realise I could still sew carrots until the end of July so may sew some more in the bed as I pull them up (mixing in some sand this time!). Are there any varieties that are good for sewing now (I quite fancy some different coloured ones) and how long will they take before they are ready to harvest?

                            Thanks.

I'm in Leicestershire too and although the first crop was ok, my second sowing hasn't appeared. Maybe its just one of those things
