  • Just had my first moonlight snail slay

Massacred about 30!!!! It IS quite therapeutic! I'm a bit freaked out by the slimy critters, so am quite proud of myself. I had loooong BBQ tongs (never again to be used for their primary purpose)

Again on that front, the other day my two year old was really reluctant to get into the car. He kept saying, ' but the slimy bug is getting into my house!". I was late and a bit harassed, but just as I was about to go lock the door, I asked him again about the bug and where the bug was. "There!!!" he said, pointing to the door.. and there, just inside the porch, was the slimy snail. My clever wee lad... I'm sure I wouldn't seen it.

I reckon we've all been at it tonight lol. I use "rookie sticks" the junior version of chopsticks - a bit like tongs, really, to pick them up. In the daytime I don't mind using my hands as I've just about got over my slimophobia, but in the night time it just seems - different, somehow...

My 3yo is very good at spotting them too. The other day she saw a slug on my tray of beans, which I thought was just a discarded bean husk thingy - it would have eaten all my precious seedlings if she hadn't spotted it!

I do it every night. I got a wind up torch that I take out with me. Touch wood, but I think I'm winning here - tonight I only found about 10, this time last year it was nearer 40, but I do the "slug trug" at least 3 or 4 times a day, so hopefully getting on top of em now

I go out with a torch, gloves and scissors!!!!!!!! then they are cut up and the snails are chucked in a bucket or lobbed, crushed, whatever as long as they die, i dont care!!

Funny when you cut them up they slime out!!! yucky yuk!!!!!

I never ever would have thought that i would pick them up, but i do with gloves on, wouldnt do it with bare hands though!!

The best time is after dark i.e. yes you need a torch!
BUT I've been finding that I get a good haul if I go just before dark, it's been cool and damp so they've been coming out before nightfall - means I can see them more clearly and not fiddle about with a torch.

Mind you, there is something quite Zennish about crouching down, intent, in the dark silence of the night... Until you find something slimy and go into killing mode anyway!

Just finished the midnight haul - I got *loads*
I must have killed at least 40-50 today.
                Sigh.

I've seen about 6 slugs this year - and no snails. Maybe I'm blessed

Great snail and slug weather here too, cold damp nights but so far one slug and no snails. With a bit of luck the recent drought has wiped them out.

                      I could be so lucky.
                      I love growing tomatoes.
