I've been using homemade compose for everything except seed sowing. 50/50 seived loam or mole hills (got lots of those) and seived leaf mould from the woods over the way. Yes it does grow weeds but as it is free I am not complaining I have actually imported some wild flowers with the leaf mould and have a super show of foxgloves this year. I also find that it holds moisture better than the commercial composts here which are mostly peat based.
