I've always been lucky - I could sleep for England. But since my redundancy, things have changed. I suppose my brain isn't tired, and I'm not stressed like I was, so I'm not mentally exhausted any more. Now I often wake, two or three times a night. Then if OH is snoring I can't get back off to sleep again - it's driving me mad. I'm horrible if I miss out on my sleep, I become a real alien.

OH can sleep anywhere, any time. He used to work split shifts when he was a Chef, so is used to a daytime nap, and still has one at weekends, if he's bored. I can't sleep if it's light.

Thankfully I got that over with 6 years ago after having my 'bits & bobs' removed! HRT never agreed with me, so I just have calcium supplements.

If I'm not sleeping, then I'm usually on the net (and on here). If anyone wants my messenger user-name/email, just PM me .

I made a lovely new photo album on my profile last night

But...when I did fall asleep, I had a horrible nightmare that tbe house was on fire and I had to run around on my broken ankle rescuing the kids

Unfortunately, if you have chronic insomnia that's not actually true, i'm afraid

I have had insomnia for ten years now and I can be awake for four or five days at a time, I have been hospitalised several times because it makes me so ill. Now I have to go to the docs every four or five days so the doc can give really strong sedative (two nights worth each week) because otherwise it can make you reallly, really psychotic/manic...

no fun for anybody when they can't sleep!

Hugs and sympathy to all you with insomnia problems.

I am tired all day, every day, but don't nap. I don't drink caffeine after lunch.
I am really tired by 9pm and go to bed, fall asleep okay, but wake up feeling totally unrested.
I have chronic back pain, and I suspect that I don't get the full "proper" sleep that you need (is it REM?) ... and I wake up several times every night in pain ... and therefore wake up feeling shattered. Every day.
                Every day for 13 years
Every fortnight or so I take a couple of sleeping pills to get me back on track, then the cycle starts all over again. What I need is effective painkillers, but there ain't none. I've tried them all, including morphine.

Wow, I had a grumble about not being able to kip properly the other week, but Red, I'm not sure I would be able to get by with your problems, or you TS. (I'm be the first to admit I'm a right wimp)
I get tinnitus due to my sinuses being blocked and a long term recurrent ear problem, and that sometimes disturbs me when it flares up, and in times of stress my thoughts keep me up cos I can't switch my brain off.

My sister is in the forces and has been trained into the 'not on watch? then I'm sleeping mindset' and can drop off at the weirdest of times, especially if she has been on recent deployment.

Hi from another member of the club nobody wants to be part of. What is it about 3am? It's like some internal alarm goes off.

Having had a read back, though, like Kirsty said Red and Two Sheds really put my crappy sleep pattern in perspective, at least I've had a few hours

Hope everyone else who's rattling around the house tonight gets some more sleep eventually

I really sympathise with T_S and it also puts my problems into perspective. My insomnia may stop me having any 'normal' sort of life routine but I should count myself lucky that I am not in chronic pain at the same time.

I have tried self-hypnosis, every herbal remedy going, Chinese medicine, acupuncture, hypnosis and all the prescription sleeping tablet known to modern medicine. In my desperation to sleep, I 've even tried several, ahem, non-prescription things as well - nothing works

Huge sympathy to both of you, and like I said, it puts my grumblings into sharp perspective.

I'm not sure if this will help anyone, but I hope so, it makes me feel better anyway. Leicester University did some research a couple of years ago, and the gist is that if you can lie in the dark at night with your eyes closed and relax, you will have tiny micro-sleeps that are so brief you don't realise you've been out at all. If you notice it at all, you may just think it's an odd, random thought, but it is actually a very short burst of REM sleep. If you can lie there and think fair enough, you're not asleep, but awake mind-wandering will do, you should relax enough for some restorative functions to happen, which makes it easier to feel human the next day.

Any more of us awake at this time of morning. I am awake cos OH has a cold ( caught from me ) and that means he cant wear his Cpap machine therefore he is snoring like a trooper. So I cant sleep.

                              I'm here, jackie

My OH is snoring for England too! Normally if I prod him he turns on his side and stops. But when he's got a cold he snores whichever way he's lying.

I usually try to mini-sleep for a few hours a night, as Hashette explained, but I can't relax when he's snoring, it irritates the hell out of me. The urge to smother him with a pillow was becoming dangerously attractive, so I got up to play instead

I was playing stupid games at 3am having slept an hour since I went to bed at 12.15am. Went back to bed at 4.30, and I'm here again! It's been like this for a few nights, so if it's like it again tonight, then tomorrow I'll take a pill and have at least a good sleep for 1 night. It sometimes works for me to break the cycle
