I have smaller plants than that of different varieties in the same size pots that are absolutely fine.

    • I have 8 vilma plants (small bush type) that are only a couple of inches high yet are starting to flower. I was concerned that they were flowering too early so decided to pinch out the flowers from 4 of the plants. It will be interesting to see what difference that makes.

        • I have three tiny tomatoes on my venus plant! And lots of flowers now on the rest. Hoping that this means they have a chance of ripening in the tiny bit of summer we end up wth

I don't usually pick off my flowers. I think Vilma is a very short plant..it will be interesting to see the growth difference between the picked:/unpicked plants. Have you got any photos?

              • Today I am going to take a side shoot off my Red Pear, Sungold and Tigerella tomatoes (these are the biggest ones with the biggest side shoots) and stick one of each in some water. I need an extra plant of all of these. They are a couple of inches long now (The side shoots on these plants) so would they be ok to grow new plants with?

                • Yes they will be fine at a couple of inches long - that's about the ideal size.

Brilliant. They're each sat in the top of their own bottle getting their feet wet. How long does it take for the roots to start showing?

I done 1 Red Pear and 2 Sungold's. The Tigerella side shoots weren't big enough.

                    • May update

The warmer weather and feeding have turned the toms around, no more yellow leaves, growing rapidly so a fight to hold them back until its ok to plant out.

Not long - tomatoes root surprisingly quickly. You should start to see small bumps on the lower stems within days and these will soon turn into roots.

Excellent. I'll keep my eye on them.

                            • Just a quick heads up folks. I had posted earlier in this thread asking for help as I'd had some problems with some of my plants a couple of months ago. Turns out the compost I was using was contaminated with clopyralid/aminopyralid herbicide and every single bag was contaminated. The compost was 'Murphy MPC' just as a warning to anyone who is thinking of buying it in the future.

The plants are doing fine now I'm using different compost, albeit their progress is a bit delayed.
